Farm-Gate Cannabis Coming to Ontario
Part of Post-Pandemic Planning Includes Opportunity for Growers to Sell Their Products Direct to Consumer – LPC
The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) announced that licensed producers in Ontario will be able to sell their own product onsite. Chief commercial officer Cheri Mara announced plans for farm-gate cannabis during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session.
“This framework will start with a clear definition of what craft means for the Ontario market,” she said. “And this definition is going to go beyond just marketing and actually reflect into the roots of craft cannabis growing in the legacy market.
Craft cannabis has long felt like it is being left out of the cannabis market. Health Canada created a micro-cultivation licence to encourage smaller growers. But its “build first” policy is still an expensive roadblock for many.
“There are a handful of producers that have submitted applications to open farm-gate stores,” Mara said. “We are starting to work with them to prepare for their launch post-COVID 19.”
This is a hugely positive move in Ontario, and step towards a more open Ontario retail cannabis market. It would be nice to see this model open to other provinces too.
