Over the years, vending machines have sold everything from Coke to toys to Beats headphones. Now, Colorado will see the first cannabis vending machine. The company, called “Anna”, launched the “tricked out vending machine” at the Strawberry Fields cannabis store in Pueblo, Colorado. It brings whole new meaning to the word “dispensary”.
“There are experienced cannabis customers who don’t necessarily need that one-on-one interaction with a budtender. They know what they want before they walk in,” said Anna CEO Matt Frost. “By doing this we’re giving more time back to the people who do need hand holding and want that education from a live person.”
He claimed it will also reduce the risk of COVID transmission. “With COVID and social distancing and contactless, definitely we have an appeal there as well,” he said.
Since the cannabis vending machines are in the stores, it’s easy enough to get age verification from all customers. The machine itself displays a digital menu on a 27-inch touch screen. Customers select what they want, pay with cash or debit, and take the dispensed cannabis.
Frost said he’s exploring options for putting the machines in gas stations and retail stores. These versions will dispense CBD though, not THC.
“The partnership that we’re about to strike I have to keep under wraps for now,” he said. “(It’s) a significant CBD distribution opportunity that we’re excited about.”
In Canada, the closest thing to a cannabis vending machine we have is the rollout of cannabis convenience stores in Alberta. But given the machines all stay inside cannabis stores, it’s not a stretch to think they could come here one day too.
